Little Annie and Little Jacob are both based on old photographs of my parents which is why the main images are within oval shapes. The borders are decorative and have their initials at the top but each is in mirror image as a reminder that photographs are only a reflection of one moment in time. They do not show the future.
In the photo Jacob (Jaap) is leaning against his mother's knee and she is sitting on a chair in the garden with a younger child on her lap. Behind them is the wooden outdoor toilet. It was probably taken about 1912. Around the border are designs typical of those which decorated porcelain Bolsward pottery.
