LOST

We went on the train, my mother and I, to visit my aunt in Amsterdam.

At the railway station we bought a bunch of bright yellow daffodils, a gift for my aunt. The woman at the flower stall told me to carry them carefully and hold them up side down so that their heads wouldn't snap off.

Not far from my aunt's home we found a family sitting on the footpath. They had all their belongings with them, chairs, tables, pots and pans and suitcases, everything. I had never seen anything like this before. My mother explained that they had been evicted from their home.

Could this happen to me? Just like that? On the street with my dolls and toys?

We walked on. We heard shouting. A woman was running after me carrying flowers. My aunt's daffodils. One by one they had slipped out of the paper wrapping and I was leaving a yellow trail behind me. She had picked them up and followed.
