After the war the lights came on again, the blackout curtains came down and with my father I went for my first street walk at night. The lights were on but they were not friendly, they cast long, lurking shadows, shadows which changed their shapes. When you approached a street lamp they shrunk, when you moved away they grew longer. These shadows were alive and very frightening. My father did not understand my terror.
