1945 and those who had spent the war years overseas started to return to Holland. Friends who had been living in Venezuela for some years came to visit our home.
She was extremely elegant in her silk stockings. Silk stockings? Perhaps they were those new nylons, but since my mother had not had anything so luxurious for five years in my mind they have always been silk stockings.
And they weren't just ordinary silk stockings, these had green seams at the back, long green seams on long silky slim legs.
The seams were not all that was green, so was my mother with absolute envy. She had been using an eyebrow pencil to fake seams on her legs!
