All very polite There are so many images that can be got from the next letter paragraph that it was hard to choose, but I decided to include my own very amateurish effort at flax weaving. You can visit Ali Brown's website which shows you how it really should be done, and there are also instructions for making a flax flower. Maoris greet each other by
rubbing noses, a custom which still continues today.
"Went into the settlement and found a good many of the Natives, who were
all very polite and insisted on shaking hands with me one by one and
would have rubbed noses I dare say if I had let them, they are good
looking men... the Ladies are remarkably good looking. I should certainly
have rubbed noses with them had they proposed such a thing, but they
were very modest, although some of them wore only a calico shirt
resembling a pinafore, which reached to the knees leaving the feet bare.
I did not see any of them in their native dress which is still more Al
Fresco." |
